Building Saudi Cloud Expertise — Certifications, Training, and the Race for Cloud Architects

Saudi Arabia needs 35,000 cloud professionals by 2030. We examine the training programmes, certification pipelines, and competitive dynamics shaping cloud talent development.

The rapid expansion of cloud infrastructure in Saudi Arabia has created acute demand for cloud computing professionals. Current workforce estimates place the number of cloud specialists at approximately 35,000, but government projections indicate that 55,000 will be needed by 2030 to support the cloud-first mandate and growing enterprise adoption.

Certification Landscape

Cloud certifications from major providers have become the primary qualification metric in the Saudi market. AWS certifications are most prevalent, with approximately 14,000 Saudi-based professionals holding active AWS credentials. Microsoft Azure certifications follow at 11,000, with Google Cloud certifications at 4,200. Multi-cloud certified professionals — holding credentials from two or more providers — are the most sought-after and command the highest compensation.

Training Programmes

The government has invested significantly in cloud training infrastructure. The Saudi Digital Academy offers foundational cloud literacy through advanced architecture programmes. The CST’s Cloud Skills Initiative has provided subsidized certification training to over 28,000 participants since 2022, with government funding covering 80% of training and examination costs.

Hyperscaler-specific programmes complement government initiatives. AWS has established three training centers in Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dammam. Microsoft operates the Azure Skills for Saudi programme in partnership with Tuwaiq Academy. Google Cloud runs a regional training hub in Riyadh focused on data engineering and AI/ML on Google Cloud.

University Pipeline

Four Saudi universities now offer dedicated cloud computing specializations within their computer science programmes: King Saud University, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Prince Sultan University, and Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University. Annual graduate output from these programmes is approximately 1,200, growing to a projected 2,400 by 2028.

Compensation Dynamics

Cloud architects in Saudi Arabia command premium compensation, with senior cloud architects earning SAR 480,000 to SAR 720,000 annually. The compensation premium reflects the intersection of high demand, limited supply, and the critical role cloud professionals play in the government’s digital transformation mandate. Some government entities have established special pay scales for cloud specialists to remain competitive with private sector offers.
